How to Take the Perfect Passport Photo
Follow these tips to get your photo right on the first try.
Step 1: Take the Photo
Use any smartphone or digital camera. Make sure the photo is sharp, well-lit, and taken at arm's length or further.
Step 2: Upload & Crop
Upload your photo to PassportPhoto. We'll guide you through cropping to the exact dimensions required for your document.
Step 3: AI Background Removal
Our AI removes your background and replaces it with the correct colour for your document type — all in your browser.
Step 4: Download & Print
Download your photo in the correct format or get a print-ready 4x6 sheet. Print at home or at any photo shop.
Photo Tips
Use natural lighting
Stand facing a window. Avoid direct sunlight, flash, or overhead lights that create shadows.
Plain white or light background
Stand in front of a white wall or hang a white sheet. No patterns or textures.
Camera at eye level
Position your phone or camera at eye level on a tripod or have someone hold it for you.
No selfies
Most countries reject selfies. Use the rear camera with a tripod or ask someone to take the photo.
Neutral expression
Mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the camera. No smiling.
No glasses
As of ICAO September 2025, most countries require photos without glasses.
Hair away from face
Both ears should be visible. Hair must not cover eyes or eyebrows.
No head covering
Unless worn for religious reasons. Face must be fully visible from forehead to chin.
